MRI after TURBT procedure

Hello

Is it usual for someone to be called for an MRI scan after having had a TURBT operation for bladder cancer.

This has been requested by my husband's urologist. We weren't told that this was likely to happen so it has come as a bit of a shock.

Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I appreciate that receiving an unexpected request for an MRI scan can be worrying.

After a TURBT procedure it's not unusual for a urologist to order further imaging tests such as an MRI scan. This can help them to get a clearer and more detailed view of the bladder and surrounding areas as well as assessing the extent of the cancer to ensure that there are no additional issues to address.

If your husband has any concerns or needs more information about this, it's always a good idea to discuss this further with his urology team. If he has a urology specialist nurse involved in his care then perhaps they can offer further advice. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this has been of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hello Celene

Thanks for replying, I did this post in a panic after we received a phone call yesteray afternoon saying that the urologist had requested an MRI scan and could he go in on Saturday (2 days away), our initial reaction was what else is wrong & why is it so urgent? My daughter in law is a nurse and she said it would just be a follow up procedure. Having thought about it rationally we think that the urgency was probably simply because they had a cancellation. He agreed to go on Sat but had some side effects from the anaesthesia including constipation which has led to very painful hemorrhoids and today he phoned and cancelled the appointment, they didn't seem too worried about this and said they would send a new appointment in the post.

Thanks for your reply and since posting I have read some info' on Cancer Research UK website about why MRIs might be needed and that is also very useful.
