Bladder cancer

Hi I’ve just been told I have bladder cancer by the urologist during my cyctoscopy, I have a date for my TURBT end of August. I have 2 tumours. My question is how does the urologist know I have cancer before a biopsy is done ? Can they tell it’s malignant by the cyctosopy? The specialist cancer nurse was called up to urology to talk to me and my daughter and I’ve had a letter from a cancer support worker from the hospital so it looks to me that I have malignant cancer? Can you shed light or should I call the specialist nurse contact number and ask them ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Yes, it is possible that the doctor was able to recognise a bladder tumour during a cystoscopy. The treatment is usually to remove them with surgery.

If you have the contact details for your hospital specialist nurse, then do make contact with them, as they will be able to access your NHS electronic patient records and hopefully answer your questions about your situation.

We have website information about bladder cancer and its treatments

I hope this helps, and things go well for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda

  • Thank you Vanda I gave them a call,  had a CT scan last week with the liquid stuff through a cannula in my arm and it’s come back with no spread outside the bladder but a mark on my left lung, can the scan show the size of the tumours?
    thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your further post,

CT scans do provide accurate clinical details, including the size and position of any masses/lesions. It can distinguish between areas of solid tissue mass, fluid, bone or air.

The consultant radiologist will prepare a report with their findings for the referring doctor. Hopefully, you will get more overall information about your diagnosis and treatment plan from your hospital team soon.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Thank you Vanda

i have the letter from the surgeon saying I have 2 tumours each about 2.5cm, it also says he sent me for the Ct scan for staging , I have talked to the nurses about the results and it showed no spread anywhere so what stage does that put me at ?

  • Hello Grams64 and thanks for getting back in touch

It is always best to ask your team what stage your cancer is at just to make sure you get the correct information. Sometimes it is only after treatment such as surgery that this can definitely be confirmed.

We have a page on the different stages of bladder cancer on our website. This explains the Tumour T, Nodes N and Metastases status that is more commonly used for bladder cancer. Stages are referred to in terms of whether the tumour has grown into the connective tissues and muscles of the bladder wall, lymph nodes or further afield. Often a patient with bladder cancer will be told they either have non muscle invasive bladder cancer, invasive or muscle invasive bladder cancer or metastatic bladder cancer.

I hope this helps but do ask your team more when you next speak with them.

  • I’ve had my TURBT now with 2 tumours removed but my bladder went into spasm during OPP and the surgeon scrapped back to much so now I have tear/hole in my bladder, I stayed in overnight and have now been home for 4 days with a catheter. I have to go back to hospital for urology nurse to take it out in 10 days, can anyone tell me how long it takes for a bladder tear/hole to heal ? I’m also still feeling a bit dizzy when walking around and tiered, is this normal? Anyone else in similar situation as me x

  • Hello Grams64 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and the complications you have experienced.

Unfortunately it is difficult to say how long it may take for this tear/hole to repair in the bladder. It will depend on many different factors, such as the size and location in the bladder and your general health and rate of healing. Do ask the nurse when you go into hospital what to expect in terms of time frames.

It isn't unusual to feel tired and out of sorts for a good few days after surgery and the anaesthetic so do take things easy. However if you notice any other symptoms such as a temperature or increased pain and discomfort do let your hospital team know.

    I hope you recover soon.
