Compacted bowel

I wanted to ask if it's ok for my husband who has had radiotherapy 6 weeks ago for tonsil cancer to have a colonic irrigation due to his bowel being compacted from the use of painkillers. He has used senna and movicol as prescribed but he's getting pain spasms and I wondered if a colonic irrigation would be a good or bad idea.

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

If the Movicol has not worked, then he must let his GP know. You do need to drink alot of fluids when taking Movicol.

We would not suggest that you attempt a colonic irrigation. The GP can ask the community district nurse to attend and assess him.

They can do a rectal examination using a gloved finger. They can administer an enema. This is fluid placed in the rectum through the anus (back passage) to clear the bowel. Often it is a phosphate enema that is given via a single dose disposable enema pack. The patient lies on their side afterwards and allows the enema to work through. It is usually successful.

    I hope this helps,
