My husband is end of life

My husband is on syringe drive and most of the time asleep.  I want to know how long this will last.  Is he going to go in his sleep? He had metastases liver cancer.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I can imagine that this is a very difficult time for you right now.

Unfortunately, we can't give you very specific information on their situation, as we are not providing direct clinical care. That is something that the community palliative care team/district nurses looking after him can comment on. Usually, someone's outlook (prognosis) is very limited, if they are becoming more frail, sleeping more, and are not eating or drinking very much.

The NHS has information on their website about changes in the last few hours or days which may help.

    Take care,

    Vanda

  • My husband passed away peaceful on the 3rd of August.  I am still grieving.

  • Hi Nanouk,

I am so sorry for your loss. Sincere condolences from the Cancer Chat team.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie

  • Hi there Nanouk and thanks for posting on the forum

I am very sorry to hear your husband passed away in August, this must be such a difficult time for you.

There is no right or wrong way of dealing with grief and most people go through a series of emotions along the way. It is often more helpful to try and take things one step at a time and be kind to yourself.  I do hope you aren't going this alone and have other people around you to support you as well as you navigate these early days of losing your husband.

Don't be afraid to share how this is affecting you and to ask for help if you feel you need it. Some people find counselling or other types of talking therapy helpful, so do consider getting in touch with cruse bereavement support.

We have a section of information called coping with grief so do take a look at this.

I am sure others on here will reply to you but if they don't consider posting on a different thread as well as on the ask the nurses page, which this is.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care of yourself

    Naomi
