Pain in arm

Just had all clear on mammogram after having breast cancer a year ago. I have though for the last couple of months had the most horrendous pain in my upper arm. I can not do anything without it hurting severely for eg get dressed. It wakes me at night if I I sleep on that side. The pain starts at the top of my arm, not the shoulder, and then runs down to my elbow. I am on letrozole and know this can cause all kinds of aches and pains but this really is becoming unbearable. I worry that I have bone cancer as it is in the same side as where I had breast cancer . I had lymph nodes removed which were clear but my arm put has been aching/throbbing so that’s worrying me. When I mention my concerns I always seem to be told it’s a side effect from surgery, radiotherapy etc so I haven’t mentioned this one to my breast care nurse . I also have low bone density as it is and have broken 2 toes in the last 6 months just by stubbing them so, I am really worried. Am I overthinking things?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about the pain you are experiencing. It's understandable to be worried especially given your previous history with breast cancer.

Letrozole along with the breast surgery and radiotherapy can indeed cause joint and muscle pain. Removing lymph nodes can cause long term changes to your arm. But it's important to let your breast care team/ nurse know that the pain is unbearable. They can assess you and possibly arrange imaging tests such as an x-ray, MRI, or bone scan to rule out bone metastasis ( spread) or other issues.

I'm not sure if you are taking any medications to help manage the pain. Sometimes it may be necessary to increase or change pain medications so you are more comfortable. Some painkillers can take a while to work and the doses may have to be increased or the pain medication needs to be changed, but this has to be done under medical supervision.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
