What to expect when thinking about radio therapy

My 89 year old father was told yesterday that his bladder cancer has progressed into the muscle. He was asked to think about his options radio therapy or camera and remove as much as possible every 3 months. He has stage 4 kidney failure. What questions should he ask to help him with this decision ? Thank you in advance. Regards

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your father's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both.

It's important that your father gets all the information he needs to make a decision that is right for him.The following questions may be helpful for him to ask his doctor:

What are the potential benefits and risks of each treatment option?

How will each treatment option impact his daily life and activities?

How will having stage 4 kidney failure affect his treatment?

Are there any long term complications he should be aware of with each treatment?

What can be expected if he chooses not to undergo either treatment?

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
