Liver biopsy

My father has been diagnosed with cancer of kidney liver and lungs. They have started with a liver biopsy can you explain why this would be the starting point

  • Hello J111mcx and thanks for your post,

The doctors may have decided that the liver was the easiest organ to biopsy. Depending on how accessible the lesion is it may have been a deciding factor in deciding where to biopsy.

Do ask them as they would have discussed how best to find out more about the cancer.

If the cancer has spread to other organs such as the kidneys and lungs the cells may well look the same in the liver.

We have some information on our website about how they may biopsy your father's liver.

    I hope this helps.

If you would would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
