Yes, it is fairly standard practice, to have a nurse sit in as part of the consultation appointment. They are there to introduce themselves, and are available for any further questions, or support, after the appointment. They usually provide you with their hospital contact details for this. As they have access to your electronic patient records, they can often answer queries in between seeing the actual hospital doctor/specialist.
