When do I see an oncologist.

I have sigmoid cancer 2-0-0. I’m being worked up to what will be complex surgery due to co-morbidities and extensive previous abdominal surgery.
At no point as yet (diagnosis 4/4/24) have I seen an oncologist to discuss options, apart from conservative management.
Can you tell what I should expect as regards a discussion on non surgical options please.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your diagnosis and the challenges you're facing. This must be a difficult time for you.

As nurses we don't recommend treatment as we are not involved in your clinical care.  Your team are better placed to advise you on this as they are familiar with all your medical details. If you have a bowel specialist nurse involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

It's important that you have a clear understanding of your treatment options so do ask to speak to an oncologist.

You can read more about the possible treatment options on our website.

I hope this has been of some help. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
