Life Expectancy - Lung Cancer

Hi everyone and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

My mother is 76 years old, suffers from severe COPD along with most other smoking related lung diseases. She hasn't smoked for 10 years, but was diagnosed* with Stage 1 Non Small Cell Lung Cancer in September last year.

Her lungs are too weak to get a biopsy, and as a result she can't get chemo or an exact cancer type, and she has decided against any other form of treatment.

What would he expected life expectancy be? I know this can be wide ranging, but the only answers i can find online are for those who have treatment. I am obviously not looking for an exact answer but just a guide for someone with her medical history and cancer stage?

many thanks

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mother's situation and I can appreciate you want to know more about her prognosis ( outlook).

Without being involved in her care, I am afraid, that it is not possible to know what it is. Other things as well as the cancer diagnosis will affect this. Such as the underlying health problems she has and how well and fit she is.

Asking her doctor might help but even they will not know exactly what her life expectancy is. However, as time goes on more about your mother's situation will be known and it might be easier to see what time she has.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
