I have incurable but treatable vaginal cancer: is my pain osteoarthritis or cancer?

Hi,  I have vaginal cancer, incurable but treatable  and have immunotherapy at Beatson every 4 Weeks. My recent CT shows no change from previous scan and repeat 12 weeks.

I also have osteo arthritis consultant said   CT showed,  lots of arthritis in the spine.

I'm in a lot of pain and confused as to whether pain it's OA or  my cancer?  The pain is so sore sometimes. Can OA travel round to lower abdomen and cause pain in pelvic area.

This makes me worry my cancer diagnosis is getting worse, I've been coping ok with brilliant family support,  I'm trying to convince myself it's not cancer. Does vaginal cancer have painful symptoms?

I would really appreciate your input as I am worrying more every day now

Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what you are going through. It's understandable to feel worried, especially when you are in pain and dealing with another health issue.

Osteoarthritis ( OA) can cause significant pain especially when it involves the spine. If the OA affects the lower spine, it can lead to pain radiating to other areas, including the lower abdomen and pelvic region.

Although vaginal cancer can cause pelvic pain, however, not everyone will experience this symptom.

Since your recent CT scan showed no changes to your cancer from the last scan it's a positive sign that your cancer is stable at the moment. Your consultant mentioned that you have lots of OA in your spine which may be more likely to indicate that this may be causing the pain in your lower abdomen and pelvic area.

I wonder if you are taking any pain medication to control your pain.  Some painkillers can take a while to work and the doses may have to be increased or the pain medication may need to be changed, but this has to be done under medical supervision.

I hope this has been of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
