  • Hello Tony and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm so sorry to hear about your temper swings and how difficult you are finding them to control. I can't begin to imagine how scary and overwhelming it must be for you when this happens, but please don't give up.

Coping with suicidal thoughts can be very difficult, especially when you feel like you have no control, but you have done the right thing by reaching out for support and advice. The most important thing for you to do right now is to concentrate on looking after yourself and staying safe. The mental health charity Mind have some very useful tips and practical advice on what you can do to help yourself, but if these feelings become a bit too intense or overpowering then please give the Samaritans a call on 116 123. They are there to listen and will do all that they can to support you and work through your thoughts and feelings with you. You can also get instant support from Shout. They are a free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope. They are available 7 days a week and are just one text away on 85258. If you ever do get to a point where you feel you are in immediate danger, please call 999, or go straight to A&E if you can.

Please also let your medical team and nurses know how strongly your treatment is impacting you as they will be able to help you understand and manage the side effects of your treatment and put you in touch with other people who can help.

Our team of cancer nurses will provide you with further information, support and advice when they return to work next week.

I and the rest of the Cancer Chat community are thinking of you Tonyrick and we are sending all our strength and support to you at this extremely difficult and challenging time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hello Tonyrick and thanks for posting

I’m sorry to read about your situation and the effect it is having on your mental health.

I'm not sure what steps you’ve taken to get some help. As Steph one of our moderators suggested there is support available when you are feeling distressed or suicidal. it is important that you share how you are feeling, so I hope you’ve been able to reach out to the support organisations she included in her response.

Cancer treatment can be incredibly tough, not just physically but emotionally to. Please talk to your specialist team about how you are feeling. If you have a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

Your team will assess you and see if see if any of the medications you are taking is contributing to the mood swings you are experiencing and they will advise you further.

We do have information on our website on getting support  for your mental health.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
