Confused - in June I was told I had the all clear, then a month later I am told the cancer is back and incurable

I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in April 2023 & had chemotherapy therapy followed by an operation then 2 more cycles of chemo.

I was told on 19th June  that my scans were all clear & ca125 was low & that I would be monitored in 3 months. I knew the caveat was that it could come back.

What I didn't expect was that one month to the day after being told all clear I got acetics & was told not only was the cancer back but it was incurable. I am starting maintaining quality of life chemo on Friday.

Was told the news on my own whilst in hospital with out my husband who has always been present. Obviously for me I didn't take it all in. For him he just wants someone to explain it to him to help him understand. How can it go from 0 to incurable so quickl?

We have requested a face to face with a doctor.

What it is, it is & we both can face this together but the confusion is hard.

Sorry needed to say something.

  • Hello Froglyn and thanks for your post,

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that this must have come as quite a shock.

It is difficult to get your mind round something like this when you have been through so much treatment already.

Unfortunately in some cases even though the scans indicate that all the cancer had been eradicated it can only take a few undetected cells for them to divide and grow.

I am sure that there will be other treatments that they may offer you that will hopefully control the cancer for a while.

We have a page on our website that explains what treatments are available when your cancer returns.

Target Ovarian has a list of clinical trials that you may or may not be eligible for but it might be worth discussing this option when you have your face to face discussion. All trials have strict eligibility criteria and you would have to match all of these in order to be considered for a trial. They are also not open everywhere in the country.

If this is something you would like to consider then do discuss the possibility of this with your doctor. To enter a trial you would have to be referred by your oncologist to the oncologist running the trial.

You may find it helpful to read through the links that I have given you so you can discuss your different treatment options with your doctor.

I do hope this helps and that your appointment goes well.

You and your husband are welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
