Just been referred under NICE 2 week for bladder cancer

Is the first test always an ultrasound or should be a cystoscopy. I am going this Friday.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm not sure if you are seeing a specialist on Friday or if you have been referred to the hospital for tests. The reason I ask this is usually if you are going to have tests it would usually specify what tests you will be having.

If you are seeing a specialist  it is likely that they will take a full history (ask you questions about your health),and do a physical examination. Depending on the assessment the specialist may order further tests and ask to see you again when the results are available. It may take a couple of weeks to get other tests organised. I don't think that it is common to get everything sorted in one visit.

You would usually have a number of tests to get a general image of your bladder. However, a cystoscopy is often considered the gold standard for directly looking inside the bladder and checking for abnormalities.

I hope this helps and you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
