Smear results

Hi,  I went for a colpscopy & was given the results of high grade dyskasrosis with features of invasive squamous carcinoma.

i am book in for a lletz procedure & biopsy under general anaesthetic.

I’m just feeling a little anxious as I’ve read that it is looking like a possibility of cervical cancer.

Could this be true

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are worried about your recent colposcopy result.

High grade dyskaryosis means that there is abnormal cell  changes in the cervix. If left untreated they may have the ability to turns cancerous which is why treatment is offered to prevent this from happening.

Features of invasive squamous carcinoma suggests that there are some signs which could indicate an early stage cervical cancer, but this is not a definitive diagnosis yet.

The LLETZ procedure and biopsy  will remove the abnormal cells and will be sent to the laboratory to take a closer look. This will give your doctors a clearer picture of what's going on and if there is any need for further treatment.

Occasionally very early stage cervical cancers are diagnosed through screening but this doesn't happen very often. If it does they are usually very easily and successfully treated.

I know waiting when you are worried is stressful but hopefully you will know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
