Gp jargon

I have received a letter from the hospital that has also been sent to my gp I have recently had a biopsy for prostate cancer as my psa levels were 8.1ugl and after an mri scan saying my pi-rads 4 I’m unsure what this means and obviously I have googled but really overwhelmed and still don’t really understand what it means, obviously I’m worried and it was done last Tuesday so they said results in 3 weeks,it’s mainly the pi -rads I don’t understand, thank you

  • Hello Lee4665 and thank for the post

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing some tests and understandably this is a worrying time for you.

I appreciate you have some questions about the results so far and in particular the PI-RADs. PI- RADs stands for the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data system that is a scoring system used by radiologists when looking at a MRI scan of the prostate. They score the PI RADS according to what they can see and the features that appear on the scan.

A PI-RADs 1 usually means it's very unlikely this is prostate cancer to PI-RADs 5 meaning it is highly likely this is prostate cancer. There is more information about this on our tests for prostate cancer pages.

A PI-RAD 4 as you can see suggests that it is likely this is prostate cancer. It is however only the prostate biopsy that can confirm this alongside the type and grade ( how different the cancer cells look to normal cells and how fast they are growing). This will help the doctor decide the best way forward in terms of treatment.

The waiting of results is never easy. Trying to keep busy and your mind on other things can help pass the time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
