Radiotherapy

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and I am taking chemo tablets for this.

this may sound a silly question but a friend at work has also just been diagnosed with breast cancer and is about to begin Radiotherapy treatment. I’m just wondering if this can affect me in any way if I’m near her.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your breast cancer diagnosis.

With breast cancer, the usual type of radiotherapy that is given is known as external beam radiotherapy. This type of radiotherapy does not make anyone radioactive so it is safe for you to be around your friend.

It is only people who are having internal radiotherapy who may be nursed in isolation, usually on a ward where strict precautions are taken.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
