My mum died of cancer and my gp won’t give support

My mum passed away with cancer, once diagnosed it had spread throughout her body but was believed to have started in her bowls, she always struggled with IBS and bowl issues. I have the same issues and I am worried. I have spoken to my gp and they said that I’m not losing weight so there is no need to test. My mum didn’t loose weight and was the same weight most of her life so I’m unsure why this should be a reason not to test me .My mum passsed away 12 weeks after her diagnosis and this gives me great anxiety as it all happen so fast and she was perfectly well untill diagnosis

  • Hello ken111 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about you losing your mum to bowel cancer and the concerns you are having similar symptoms to her.

It is important that you go back to see your GP with any ongoing or worsening bowel symptoms. They usually can run some tests including bloods and a FIT test which involves giving a poo sample to check for microscopic blood.

If the last GP didn't seem to take you seriously you could ask to see a different doctor.

Do also bear in mind that bowel symptoms can be caused by other things that aren't cancer as well. Irritable bowel syndrome and other inflammatory bowel conditions are common and can cause people a lot of unpleasant symptoms too.

I hope your doctor will run some tests that hopefully will put your mind at ease for now.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
