Colonoscopy

I had a colonoscopy yesterday due to bleeding and a FIT test finding blood.

I'm 42. During my colonoscopy the people performing it commented (a lot) about the high number of polyps I had. They seemed surprised by the high number. Most were small, one they removed was huge. There were too many for them to remove them all so I have to go back in a few months for them to get the rest. They seemed quite laid back about it but now I can't stop worrying about how shocked they were to find so many and what this means for me?

Is this really bad?

  • Hello Newy12345 and thanks for posting

I imagine this is a worrying time for you but please try not to over think this for now.

Bowel polyps aren't uncommon but unfortunately some people are more prone to them than others. I assume they will be testing the polyp they removed to give more information but if needed they may run some more tests to find out more.

There are some conditions that can cause higher levels of polyps, I cannot say if you have one of these but if the doctors are concerned this is a possibility they may test you. The conditions including familial adenomatous polyposis (fap) and lynch syndrome may increase the risk of someone developing bowel cancer so often polyps will be removed and people monitored regularly to prevent this.

There is more information 'screening for people at higher risk of bowel cancer' on our website.

I hop you know more soon and that your doctor can put your mind at ease.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
