Loosing taste after neck radiotherapy

Hi

My dad recently had 7 weeks of neck radiotherapy and completely lost his taste half way in. He’s had an awful taste in his mouth and it’s been very dry. Today he was able to taste salt and his mouth is less dry. It’s been two weeks since his last treatment. Is this a good sign?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn of your dad's situation and that he has needed to have radiotherapy, this must be a difficult time for you all.

It sounds like your dad's taste may be starting to come back which is positive as this may be a sign that the side effects are starting to improve, but it can still take some time.

It will be a while before you will know how well the treatment has worked because the body needs time to recover from the treatment. When your dad has his next appointment the doctors may want him to have a scan and then they may be able to give him more of an idea of how well the treatment has worked.

It can be a difficult and uncertain time recovering from treatment and not knowing how well the treatment has worked. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best,

    Jemma

  • Hi Jemma

Thanks for the reply. It was adjuvant radiotherapy so hopefully all is well.
