Breast cancer and Menopause

Hi,

female 45 recently been diagnosed with breast cancer ER 8/PR 8, with this i’ve had to stop taking HRT on the 24th of May. 2 weeks ago I had breast surgery and await further results, I’ve tried to let the natural process of menopause take its path, however, I am really struggling with mood and especially insomnia and therefore looking for an alternative to support my symptoms. I have seen a product called Menopause complex, but I want to ensure it’s ok to take given the hormone receptors in my cancer.  There so much information I feel lost in it all but just want to ensure whatever I take will not be a feeder for my cancer.

Thank you in advance C x

  • Hello C, and thank you for posting

I am sorry to learn of your situation and the menopausal symptoms you are experiencing. This must be a difficult time for you.

We cannot recommend specific supplements, however, you may find it helpful to read our information on coping with sex hormone symptoms which provides useful tips. Also, there is information on the Breast Cancer Now website which will also hopefully help.

The website menopause and cancer is useful to know and there is also a webpage on how to find a menopausal specialist either on the NHS or privately which is something you may wish to consider.

It may also be worth having a chat with your breast nurse specialist (CNS) as they may also be able to advise you further. You may need to leave a message with them but they should get back to you.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
