Diagnosis

Hi I had a colonoscopy done at the end of June and on the diagnosis form the consultant wrote colrectol cancer, diverticulitis and polyps

There was biopsy done also

can the consultant tell by looking that they are cancerous and do I have cancer 100% for sure

I still haven’t had any results as of yet or no contact from my Gp

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and can only imagine what a difficult time this is for you.

It is usually the biopsies taken during the colonoscopy that can confirm a bowel cancer. Although the doctor carrying out the procedure are often very experienced and may be able to say at the time if they can see a cancerous tumour. However when this is the case they would normally talk this through with you on the day.

It sounds like from the report they picked up several things during the colonoscopy as well as taking the biopsies, which is standard procedure. Unfortunately no one here can say whether this is definitely cancer and therefore suggest you get in contact with the hospital to find out more. Hopefully the results will be back soon and an appointment will be made to discuss these and what needs to happen next.

Your GP should have also been copied into your letters but there can be a delay in your surgery getting these sent through. You could also ask to speak with your GP to talk this through.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
