Cervix cauterisation

Hi,
I recently had a coloposcopy and had cells on my cervix cauterised with silver nitrate. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and any advise. The doctor said I may experience some brown discharge and bleeding and no sex until bleeding stops, however I haven’t bled and although the discharge is heavier than normal it isn’t brown.
I just haven’t been given much after care on how I should proceed and there’s a lot online but all contradicts each other.
Any advice welcome :)

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you needed to have your cervix cauterised.  Although you do not have dark discharge, you would still need time for the cervix to heal and the general advice is to use pads and not tampons, and to avoid having penetrative sex until after the discharge settles.

If you are concerned you could try ringing the department where you had the procedure done or perhaps speak with your GP.

I hope things settle for you soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
