A worried husband

Hello. My wife has just had a colonoscopy after heavy bleeding for the last three months the gp kept saying it was piles. They have found a “mass” in the bowel and took 10 pieces for biopsy the specialist nurse called us in to say what they had found and the next steps first a full blood tests followed by mri and scans once they have all the results they can tell us what the next step will be depending on the results i am really worried no scared of what the findings will show I don’t now what to do my wife is so much stronger than me with this people are saying wait till all the results are in then you can get some answers but my wife is convinced it’s going to be bad news and its spread into her organs i have tried to say to her they don’t know yet what it is it might be a polyp it might be benign but she keeps saying it’s bad I know it I just don’t know what to do or say.

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your wife's situation. Waiting for scans and results can be a difficult and stressful time.

There is a lot of uncertainty for you both so I can understand that she might be scared and thinking the worse. Unfortunately, until the results are known no one can say what her situation is, which can be difficult to come to terms with.

It is also tough to see loved ones go through something like this and often people can feel quite helpless. There is no right or wrong to deal with this and although it may not feel like it, it is important to know that just being there for your wife is being supportive. Macmillan Cancer Support has information about cancer tests and waiting for results which you may find helpful to read.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.

I hope you get the results of everything soon, take care, all the best

    Jemma
