Head and neck cancer radiotherapy burns

I finished my radiotherapy treatment last Friday.

The sin on my neck which was very red has now broken into blisters.

I would like advice on what to do. I am keeping it clean and putting on the cream I was given in case this happened, but should I be covering it?

I am concerned about infection

Many thanks

  • Have you had any problems with taste or eating? Have you tried yellow paraffin on your skin?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry to read about the sore skin that you are experiencing following your radiotherapy treatment.

It is normal for the skin to become red and blister during or following treatment. It is worth speaking to your radiotherapy team or nurse specialist for their advice on this as they are involved in your care. They can decide if you need to be prescribed another cream and whether a non-stick dressings to cover the area is recommended.

A skin reaction may be at its worst two weeks after treatment, but should then start to improve after this.

We have information on our website on skin care and radiotherapy that you may find useful.

I hope things improve for you soon. If you would like to discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a ring. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
