Adjuvant radiotherapy

My dad, who’s 83, has just had 33 days adjuvant radiotherapy to his neck. He did well during the treatment but now is feeling very tired and sleeping most of the day. He Isn’t feeling unwell just tired and a little depressed. Is this normal? Also, he lost his taste 4 weeks in and now struggles with taste. He can manage soup and yoghurt. Will his taste slowly return? Any advise greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Dazza, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to hear about what your dad is going through with the side effects of his radiotherapy. Everyone is quite different in how they get on and how long these last. But, there are different supports to help him at this time.

If he has a specialist nurse (CNS) it would be good to update them about how your dad is doing, in case he needs nutrition support at this time. This on our website about taste changes may help and Macmillan has information too on managing eating problems.

Take care Dazza, and hopefully, your dad will start improving soon. If you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
