Decison on Breast Cancer Surgery

How do I make a decision between a 50% reduction and a Flap or a full 100% cut??

  • Hello Shaz63 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is never easy been asked to make a decision about the type of surgery for your breast.

if you have been asked to make a decision there are no right or wrong answers but what feels best for your situation. It is important that you have time to ask questions.

If you decide to have a mastectomy are you planning on having a reconstruction at the same time or is this something that will be offered at a later date.

You need to look at the recovery time after each type of surgery and the impact that it will have on your life.

On our website and Macmillan and Breast Cancer Now there is information on making these decisions and the types of questions you need to ask your breast cancer nurse and your surgeon.

You can see the different types of surgery here

and making decisions by Macmillan and more information by Breast Cancer Now

You have posted in 'ask the nurses' but if you post on another thread or start your own you might find that you have more women coming forward who have had to face similar situations.

Do have a read through the different links as it might bring up different questions to ask your team.

if you would like to discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses you are welcome to get back to us or give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
