Complex polyp

I am due to have a 5 cm rectal polyp removed and the procedure will take between 4 to 6 hours, they have also identified at least 3 medium sized lymph nodes, this is being done only with sedation. I am really concerned that this will identify cancer, due to the findings should I be worried

  • Hello Juek and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is difficult for me to give an opinion without being involved in your care and knowing what has gone on to lead you to this point.

The doctors will know more once the surgery has been performed and the pathologist has had a chance to look at the polyp and the lymph nodes under a microscope.

Once you have had the surgery the results will be presented at a formal meeting where any scans and tests will be reviewed. All suspected cancers are taken to an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) Meeting. I can understand how unsettling it can be so try and take one day at a time.

I do hope that you know more soon.

If you would find it helpful to talk through any of this with one of the helpline nurses you are very welcome to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
