Post mastectomy swelling

Hi all. I had a mastectomy and removal of some lymph nodes over 2 weeks ago. I am really struggling with the swelling. Had site drained a week ago. Back just as bad. I am doing as told  by nurses and resting lieing at 45 degree angle.  Any advice to reduce swelling please?.

  • Hello claireon and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about  your recent surgery and the problems you are having.

Unfortunately some swelling and a build up of fluid ( seroma) isn't unusual after breast surgery. It sounds like you are doing all you can to best manage this but i'm afraid it is usually a matter of time and patience that will stop this fluid collecting.

It is important to let the breast care nurses know that the fluid you had drained off has refilled again. They will probably want to see you to decide whether they need to drain this off again. For some patients this can be ongoing for a number of weeks or more and may need to be drained on several occasions.

I hope things start to improve for you soon so that you can move on with your recovery.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
