Liver lesions

My mum has recently been diagnosed with rectal cancer and her CT has shown several “Indeterminate” liver lesions, possibly benign haemangiomatas. She has a follow up mri next week to double check them.Could these be Metastasis to her liver? Or is there a good chance they are just cysts? If her rectal cancer has spread to her liver, will that change her treatment plan?

  • Hello there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum's current situation and appreciate you having questions.

For now if possible it is best to sit tight, the doctors are running a pet scan to check out whatever these liver lesions may be. Unfortunately it will only be the results that can determine exactly what these are and if they are anything to be concerned about.

Bowel cancer can spread to the liver as you say but likewise liver lesions can also be benign (non cancerous), for your mum only the scan will give more information about these.

You haven't mentioned the proposed treatment for your mum at the minute but usually the treatment needed will depend on the type, stage ( size and extent) and grade of the cancer alongside the general health and fitness status of the individual.

I really hope you both know much more about the situation soon and that your mum will be okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
