Breast issues four years after radiotherapy

Radiotherapy after lumpectomy and axilla clearance left me with a degree of lymphoedema in my breast. An area round the nipple became thick and fibrotic, the orange peel  effect. My skin has been getting drier and recently I have noticed see  flaking skin round the thickened area. I moisturised twice a day and tried different creams but no difference. I’ve used zerobase, savlon, and sudacrem.  I don’t use perfumed products generally. Self massage isn’t helping . Any advice on the best way to moisturise damaged skin? Just wondering why it seems to have worsened so long after treatment. The skin seems thicker too.

ive recently had a hysterectomy for endometrial cancer. The lymph nodes were spared, so not sure if that is a factor.

  • Hello FionaMR and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation. If you haven't already I suggest you arrange an appointment with your doctor so they can assess this further. If needed they can refer you back to the breast clinic or to a lymphoedema service if they think this is linked to the lymphoedema.

We have some information about caring for your skin when you have lymphoedema on our website for you to take a look at. Whilst good skin care including moisturising is important, lymphoedema often needs compression ( in the form of a compression bra/vest type garment) and self massage as you mentioned. Patients need to be advised by a specialist in lymphoedema or breast care nurse how and when to perform this to make sure it is done correctly.

Unfortunately we cannot advise on specific products however the Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN) have some suggestions on their website.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
