Worried about skin cancer

Hi

I've had a mole removed 6 weeks ago. At my appointment I was told if the mole needed to be sent away for extra testing then this wouldn't be good news.

I found out yesterday that it's had to be sent away and now I have to wait even longer. I've recently had a mental health breakdown and this is causing me a lot of anxiety.

Just wondering how long do you think the next testing will take?

Thank you

  • Hi and thank you for your post,

Waiting for biopsy results can be a stressful and difficult time, especially if you are also managing anxiety.

As we are not involved in your care or are part of the NHS, we unfortunately cannot say how long you will need to wait. A lot will depend on how urgently the results have been requested. If there is a concern there is a possibility of cancer, then it should be prioritised and you probably would expect to wait 2-4 weeks.

If you do get concerned that you are waiting too long for your results, you could contact the skin specialist's secretary to see if they have the results, or perhaps speak with your GP as they may be able to chase them on your behalf.

I do hope you are not having to wait too long before you hear from the hospital. Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

  • Hello Darris and thanks for your post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and you are waiting to have more surgery.

Do chase up your team if you haven't already to see if a date has been allocated for your operation. I appreciate how waiting can be very unsettling and I hope you know more soon.
