Pancreatic cancer

Can you please advise the most suitable chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer that has spread to the liver

My husband has been offered gemcitabine by the NHS and if that doesn’t work we will be offered fulfirinox.

However, we have also been advised that fulfirinox is much more effective for pancreatic cancer that has spread.

I would be most grateful for some clarification regarding this.

Many thanks

Nicole

  • Hello Nicole and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your husband's diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you both.

As nurses, we do not recommend treatment. This needs to come from your husband's specialist team.

Gemcitabine is often used as a first line chemotherapy treatment. It is generally well tolerated and has fewer side effects, making it easier on patients especially those who might be older or have other health issues.

Folfirinox is sometimes used if gemcitabine is not effective but can also be a first line treatment for certain patients. Studies have shown it can be more effective in extending survival for some patients with advanced cancer. It has more side effects and can be harder to tolerate because it's a combination of different chemotherapy drugs.

The choice between these treatments often depends on several factors, including a patients age, their overall health and how well they can manage the potential side effects.

Doctors sometimes start with gemcitabine because it's easier to tolerate and then move to folfirnox if the patient can manage it and the cancer isn't responding well to the first treatment.

You and your husband can discuss this further with his specialist team. They can help you both understand the potential benefits and risks of each in the context of his situation. Every patients situation is unique and doctors aim to choose the best treatment pan tailored to a persons individual needs.

I hope this has been of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
