Smear Test Issues

Hi I need some advice for a smear test. I want to get one due to family history however I have been to the GP 2/3 times and each time I had to stop as it was painful and the nurse wasn’t very considerate to this nor history of hip pain I have. Could I get some advice please?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you find your smears painful, there are reasons why it can be more uncomfortable for some than others, like a tilted cervix for example.

If you also have problems with hip pain it might be an idea to take painkillers an hour before the procedure. But, if the pain is something that concerns you, then do go to the GP to talk that through and they will decide if that needs further investigation.

This goes through the risks and causes of cervical cancer if helpful.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
