transperineal prostate biopsy next week

I am scared stiff about having my transperineal prostate biopsy next week because of the pain

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It's understandable to feel scared about having a transperineal prostate biopsy. Many people worry about the pain and discomfort they may feel.

You usually have this test in the outpatient department under local anaesthetic. Sometimes, people may have it in the operating theatre under a general anaesthetic. This is when they are asleep during the procedure.

If you are having a local anaesthetic this will numb the area  and this can help to minimise the pain. The staff will talk through your concerns if you are feeling anxious. Some patients may also receive a mild sedative to help them relax. While you may experience some pressure or mild discomfort, severe pain is uncommon.

This procedure is important for diagnosing prostate issues and can help guide the best treatment for you.

We have some information on our website on having a transperineal biopsy that might be useful to you.
