Nerve Damage

I had a kidney cryoablation 2 weeks ago and I noticed my groin was numb then after a couple of days I got this awful sensation and stabbing pains.in my groin and in parts my skin is too sensitive to touch,  I am fairly sure this is nerve damage but my question is how long will it last and will it ever heal?

  • Hello Maryelsie and thanks for the post

I'm sorry to hear you recently had some cryoablation (sometimes called cryotherapy) to the kidney and are experiencing some discomfort.

As you say the nerves can be damaged temporarily during this procedure as the cancer cells are frozen but this usually settles down within a couple of weeks. Some people it can take longer (months) but if you are concerned or it worsens do let your team know.

We have some more information about kidney cryotherapy and common side effects from this procedure on our website.

I hope the side effects ease off and you begin to feel better in yourself soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
