Hi i have just had blood tests and got my first PSA reading of 30 ? I was told it should be around 4.5, I'm worried sick that this is really serious. I have been placed on a 2ww Urology service so hopefully more tests might prove or disprove, prostate cancer. I have private medical insurance I don't know if to contact them to see if I can get a diagnosis any quicker. Could it just be an enlarged prostrate? are there any alternatives to cancer?

    I am sorry to hear about you needing to have some more tests and appreciate what an anxious time this must be for you.

    A PSA test can be raised for many reasons other than cancer. As you say an enlarged prostate or an infection can also cause the level to rise. Other factors can also cause a false reading such as a urine infection, rigorous exercise or certain medications, Prostate Cancer UK have more information about this.

    The important thing for now is that you are checked out and any further tests needed are carried out to find out more.
