PET Test and prostate cancer

I have stage 2 prostrate cancer can you tell me what a pet test is?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

A PET test is a type of scan. The scan uses a mildly radioactive liquid to show up areas of your body where cells are more active then normal. In prostate cancer it is looking to see if the cancer has spread to another part of your body. The doctors and nurses looking after you should help explain why you are having this test.

Prostate Cancer UK  explains more about this test and other tests that may be done in deciding the best treatments for a patient.

As I am not involved in your care it is difficult to know whether this test is something that has been organised for you

Do talk to your team about any of the tests that you are having so you have an understanding of why they are being done. Never be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine, thank you so much for your help, there is one more thing, I’ve had my biopsy and was told that I may have some blood in my ejaculation, as the biopsy was done a month ago, i still have blood in it, i hope you can give me some information about this?

    many thanks,

    Les.

  • Hi Les and thanks for getting back to us

As the hospital team said it isn't uncommon to see blood in the semen following a prostate biopsy. This can be ongoing for several weeks so this isn't necessarily anything to be too concerned about.

Of course if you are noticing any other symptoms and/or it continues much longer then let your doctor know so they can assess you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
