Liver Cancer

Hi..

My dad has advanced liver cancer and is going to hospital tomorrow to have a permanent drain fitted to his abdomen. Is this a good thing as it will reduce his fluid? Ive seen online that the drain can stay in for several months..so what happens after that?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation this must be a tough time for you.

From what you say your dad has a build up of fluid in his abdomen, known as ascites. The doctors can put in a drain to remove this excess fluid as needed to provide some relief for patients. Once drained it can be closed off and covered with a dressing until more fluid needs to be taken off.

A permanent drain as said on the long term drains to treat ascites webpage of our website says can remain in place as you say for several months. If at any point the doctors feel this needs to be removed completely they will discuss this with your dad and what needs to happen next.

I hope this drain helps your dad and that you both are getting the support you need at this time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi

  • Just wondering does this buy him more time?

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

The drain is in place to keep your dad more comfortable and to reduce the amount of trips to hospital rather than extend his life.

The best person to ask about your dad's prognosis is his healthcare team as they are familiar with all his medical information.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
