Complete parotidectomy.

I have mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and have a choice of a complete removal of my salivary gland, or radiotherapy.

I've already had a superficial parotidectomy, and recovery has been good, but there's still a way to go.

I'm interested in the likelihood of complete facial paralysis, and if there are any stats available?

My next appointment with my consultant is on the 25th July, and that will be decision day.

Would love some expert advice.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and that you now have more important decisions to make.

As nurses here we cannot recommend treatments and the decision needs to be made by you taking into consideration all the information you have about the different treatments to make the right choice for you.

Just in case you haven't see it already we have some information on our web pages about types of surgery for salivary gland cancers and problems after salivary gland surgery.

As it says on the website there are a range of risks and possible side effects with this procedure including nerve damage and paralysis that can either be temporary or permanent. Do discuss this with your own surgeon so that they can explain what the risk of this happening may be for you.

Whilst it is possible to search up on the internet various medical papers about statistics for paralysis with these types of surgery. These percentages of risk seem to vary quite a lot. I think this is a question to ask your own surgeon to get a better understanding of these.

I'm unsure if you have heard of the charity SalivaryGlandCancer.UK but they may also be able to help you navigate these decisions as well.

I'm sorry that I haven't been able to answer you question on this occasion but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
