Vagal Paraganglioma

I haven’t been able to find a section on the website about my vagal tumour? It is on my vagus nerve in the carotid bifurcation on my right side. I am trying to find out about Fractioned Radiation therapy.

  • Hi and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation.

Unfortunately, we do not have specific information about vagal paraganglioma, but there is some limited general information about paraganglioma on our page about phaeochromocytomas.

We have general information about radiotherapy and its side effects that you may find helpful to read on our website.

The full dose of radiation is divided into smaller doses. These are called fractions and this is what fractionated radiotherapy is. This is given so healthy cells can recover between treatments. Another reason is over several weeks the cells within the tumour cycle go through different phases of their growth cycle; the tumour itself changes which affects the blood flow. These changes allow the radiation to be more effective against the tumour.

The best person to discuss your treatment and what to expect would be your specialist as they know your situation and your treatment plan.

I hope this helps a little. Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
