Sigmoid cancer and bowel symptoms

I’m being worked up for bowel cancer surgery it’s taking a while as I have several complications. I’m worried the tumour is blocking my colon making passing of poo more and more difficult. I understand a blockage is an emergency but don’t have all symptoms. How will I know if I should go to A&E? My cancer is relatively early at 2-0-0.

Any advice?

  • Hello Peterfs,

I just wanted to let you know that our nurses are not online over the weekend and they will respond to you in the next few days. You can also get in touch with them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on this free number 0808 800 4040. Even if you don't have all the symptoms of blockage, I think it would be a good idea to seek medical advice on this today - I would suggest you ring 111 for expert advice on how best to proceed. Explain that you are worried about having a blockage and you have been diagnosed with sigmoid cancer. They will be able to tell you whether they think you should go to A&E and what you should do so do get in touch with them today.

I hope that things improve for you quickly and that you manage to speak to a doctor soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and to hear you are awaiting surgery.

If you are experiencing increased problems with opening your bowels I suggest letting your doctor/hospital team know.

As you say obstruction is considered a medical emergency but people often experience severe tummy pain, nausea and vomiting and may be unable to pass any stools/wind, when this occurs.

If you are worried you should seek medical advice.

    Best wishes
