  • Hello Daisysheila and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you both.

A GIST (Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumour) is a rare type of cancer that starts in the soft tissues (a type of soft tissue sarcoma). It usually affects the digestive tract but it can also grow into other areas as well as here. Do read the information about this on our website on the highlighted link.

Surgery is used to remove as much of the tumour as possible and the doctors involved will be able to say what they hope this will achieve for your mum.

In terms of what stage your mum's cancer is , which means the size and extent ( where the cancer is and if it has spread to nearby lymph nodes or more distant organs) only the team involved can give you this information. Do speak with them when you can, to ask them.

I hope this is helpful, Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
