i wish to take my husband away to our holiday home in spain, during the break in his chemo cycle.

he is now on his second cycle and so far he has not had any side affects

having trouble getting a definite  answer to our questions. they say we cannot say yes or no to this.

i have heard of patients going abroad while they have cancer, and we are not going to a hotel but to our own property.

can you advice

  • Hello Mary and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear your husband is undergoing some chemo at the moment.

I can understand you wanting to get him away on holiday and a break away from treatment, but it is only the doctors who can say whether this is okay for him.

The problem with going away isn't about the accomodation you will be staying in but rather the travelling to and from Spain and what would happen if he were to become unwell whilst away.

I appreciate he has had very minimal side effects so far but with each cycle of treatment this could change. Unfortunately patients having chemo generally do have a lowered immune system and are at greater risk of picking up infections. Patients may not be able to fight off these infections without medical treatment and a hospital admission, which could cause issues when in Spain.

As you say some patients do go abroad whilst having chemotherapy but this needs to happen at a time when it is safe and the risks minimal to the patient. Discuss this again with the doctor when you can to find out what is best at this time.

We have some general advice for patients travelling abroad with some more food for thought on this topic.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best to you both
