Strange looking mole

Recently i Have noticed on my left tight a mole that's have irregular shape and it's dark and light brown, the diameter is about 0,5 cm. Can it be cancerous? I have also a picture

  • Hi, if you are concerned I would recommend seeing a health professional. I noticed a new spot myself on my left thigh in November. I kept an eye, checking it every month. Then in February this year decided to get a second opinion as it was growing and not going away. Had a referral to dermatology. At the end of April it had doubled in size and the surface had changed from being flat and smooth to bobbly. Sent in new photo and Dermatology called for me in May. Shave biopsy performed. Literally got the results in a letter yesterday “shows the presence of a kind of cancer arising from the muscle” whilst there was a chance of it being merely a fleshy mole the dermatologist at the time couldn’t be certain and recommended a shave biopsy. Personally I recommend you go see someone. Even if to put your mind at ease and not to worry. Wishing you all the best xx

  • Thank you for your reply, I will book an appointment to get it checked

  • Yeah, absolutely no one can give you an answer on here or elsewhere on the internet. The only way you will get an answer is to see a doctor in person, and getting a biopsy if the doctor deems it necessary.

  • Hi Sylwia123

I am sorry to learn that you are worried about your health.  As nurses, we are unable to diagnose anyone and our system does not allow us to accept any photographs.

The best advice I can give you is to visit your GP.  GP's are very used to assessing moles and if they suspect something isn't right they will refer on to the dermatologist ( skin specialist).

You can read more here about getting your moles checked by your GP.

It's important to keep in mind that many moles can change over time, so it's essential to have anything that looks different checked out to ensure it's not a cause for concern.  In most cases, symptoms are not caused by cancer, but it's always wise to have any issues examined just to be safe.

You are right to check your skin for any changes that may occur.  As well as the ABCDE   rule which I expect you have read about, there is also the idea of looking for the odd one out, that is a mole that doesn't look like all the others. Also the NHS website has a mole assessment tool.

I hope this information is useful.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
