TP biopsy

I have this booked on Friday….is this painful and are their associated risks ?

  • Hello Gladwyn and thanks for your post,

The trans perineal biopsy is either done under local or general anaesthetic. They will numb the area but there may still be some discomfort.

Trans perineal biopsies are safe tests but there is always the risk of infection, difficulty passing urine, bleeding and some pain.

You may have been asked to take antibiotics to minimise the risk of infection. It is a good idea to try and also increase your fluid intake to help prevent infections. Having some paracetamol at home may be a good idea especially if you are experiencing some discomfort once you get home.

We have some information about having a TP biopsy and what to expect on our website.

You may also find it helpful to look at ProstateCancer UK  at what they have to say about biopsies.

The doctors use your MRI scan to help guide them to where the biopsies need to be taken.

I am sure that you will be given information about what to expect when you get home. If you have any signs of an infection such as a high temperature or any shivering or feeling unwell then do let the hospital know.

You could also ask the doctor when you may expect to get your results back.

Biopsy results may take a couple of weeks or in some cases a bit longer. The pathologist looks at any biopsies under a microscope and then reports their findings.

I do hope that all goes well on Friday.

I hope this is helpful. If you would like to talk any of this through with on of the helpline nurses the do give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
