Breast reconstruction

Hi I’m having a terrible time with acute anxiety after having a mastectomy. I wanted to have immediate reconstruction but in the event because I developed a phobia of general anaesthetic, I could only have the mastectomy. The only way I can really see my mental health improving is to have an implant as soon as possible. However I’ve been told I have to wait a few months and can only have it done under general. So many operations can be done under local anaesthetic these days and I’m desperately trying to find a surgeon who would be willing to do this preferably on the nhs or otherwise private. Can anyone help me or advise me about this.?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry to read about your diagnosis and the effect it is having on your mental health.

I'm not sure what steps you have already taken to get some help, but if you haven't, do talk to your GP to ask for their input and let them know how much you are struggling. There are a range of mental health services that your GP can refer you to including counselling, so do arrange an appointment so that you can speak to them to ask for their help.

We do have information on our website on getting support  for your mental health.

It's not possible to say if a particular surgeon and anaesthetist would be willing to carry out reconstructive surgery under local anaesthetic as this type of surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic. Local anaesthetics are mainly used for relatively minor procedures that doesn't usually involve going too deep into the body tissues.

I'm afraid we don't have lists or details of surgeons. The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons ( BAPRAS) has a list of surgeons and hospitals that offer reconstructive surgery. Some patients consider a private consultation with a specialist and there is a website called goprivate.com where details of specialists can also be searched.

I hope this is of some help to you. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
