Melanoma

Hi I've bene referred by the gp to a urgent specialist appointment for suspected skin cancer due to my mole being 6mm, ridged edges, two tone colours and sometimes itchy.

How likely is it at my first appointment they will remove the mole ? Do I need to take.someone to the appointment with me to drive me.home or can I get the bus. Or will they ask me to go back another day.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am afraid that I cannot tell you if the mole will be removed on the your first visit. This is because some hospital's will want to organise it for another day and some will be able to do it on the same day.

The removal of a mole is usually done with a local anaesthetic, so you would not need to have someone take you home but, you may wish to have someone with you. We have information about an excision mole biopsy on our website.

You should get a letter or text explaining what will happen at your appointment.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
