Anal cancer skin care

Hi

My mum has just undergone radio/chemo therapy for anal cancer. During the treatment she seemed to be fine but since the treatment has finished there are open wound sores around the anus vulva and groin area. We are 8 days post completion of treatment. She is so much pain and we have started a course anti biotics today. Could you give me some advice re how we can help speed up her recovery? And how to care for these delicate areas. We are receiving guidance from the DN too but just wondered if you had any tips pls

  • Hello PCG and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear your mum has just finished treatment for anal cancer.

Unfortunately because the treatment continues to work for a little while after it has stopped the side effects can get worse before they start to get better.

It is best that the DN and the hospital team advise about skin care and what to or not to put on the area for now. They are in a position to examine the wound and skin around it to best treat and manage it. There is information about managing radiotherapy side effects on our web pages.

The healing process can take time and patience is needed in order for this to happen. Diet and good nutrition especially sources of protein play an important part in this but there can be limitations as what one person is or isn't able to eat at times like this. We have some information diet after anal cancer treatment on our website.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
