Where to send medical records

I have a question about where to send medical records. in about three weeks I am moving from the US back to Scotland where I was born to be close to my son. I’ve been receiving cancer treatment in the US and will need follow-up care when I get to Scotland. I I will be moving close to Aberdeen and assume I will get my follow up care in Aberdeen.  I need to know where to send my medical records. Please advise.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m not sure when you were last in the UK and whether you had a GP (family doctor).  If you did have one then it is important to contact them before you leave so your doctors abroad can send all your medical information. The GP would then be able to refer you to an oncologist  ( cancer specialist) at a hospital near where you are going to be living. I am not sure how long this process will take but hopefully by contacting the GP as soon as you can will hopefully speed this up this process. If you do not have a GP there is information on the NHS website on how to find a GP.

If you have lived outside the UK for a while you are not automatically entitled to NHS care unless you can demonstrate that you are coming back to the UK as a permanent resident. There is some information on our website about  returning from living abroad that you may find useful to look at.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  When you return to the UK you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
